What is a backlit poster made of?
A backlit poster is printed on a translucent material — either heavier backlit paper or, more commonly for quality work, a polyester backlit film with a built-in diffusion layer. The material is designed so light passes through evenly, which is what creates the even glow inside a lightbox or LED frame.
Why does my backlit poster look blotchy when it's lit?
Blotchiness usually comes from the wrong material, ink density that's too low for backlighting, or an uneven light source — not a printing fault. Backlit paper without a diffusion layer, or a cheap LED frame that lights only the edges, will show patches. Backlit film and an even frame fix it.
What is the difference between backlit film and backlit paper?
Backlit film is a translucent polyester with a diffusion layer that spreads light evenly, holds dense colour and resists tearing and moisture. Backlit paper is cheaper and lighter but has little diffusion, so it relies on a perfectly even light source. Film is better for premium, large or long-term displays.
What GSM should backlit paper be?
Heavier backlit paper resists cockling and handles better, but for backlit work the material's diffusion quality matters more than GSM alone.
How do I make a backlit poster frame?
You can build a simple backlit frame using an LED light panel, a diffuser sheet and a shallow frame to hold the printed film against the diffuser. The trickiest part is even lighting — a single or edge LED array without a diffuser creates hot spots. For a professional, even glow, a purpose-made, LED-backlit poster frame is far more reliable.
Can any poster be printed as a backlit poster?
Almost any design can be used, but it needs to be prepared for backlighting first — richer colour, built-up blacks and transmission-tuned ink density — and it must be printed on backlit material, not standard paper. A standard poster simply lit from behind will look washed out and patchy.
How long do backlit posters last?
It depends on the material and the environment. Backlit film in a quality frame lasts considerably longer than backlit paper, which can cockle or fade over time, especially with heat from the light source.
